My programming story

Everyone has their own story about programming. How they stumbled upon a new language, fell in love with it and maybe breaking up with it. I’ll share mine.

Visual Basic is my first programming language. I was in standard 6 when I discovered my father’s book - Using Visual Basic 3.0 when I was playing upstairs. Finding it interesting, I tried copy and pasting a few codes into VB5 installed in my WIN95 pc. Of course I didn’t learn much at that time but at least I had my own working calculator.

When I was in Form 2, Mr.Affendi taught us VB6 in his class. Again in Form 5, I relearned VB from my computer teacher. My thesis project was also using VB. At the end of 2005 I realized that VB actually is not a good language. Why? Because it’s not portable. You can’t run any VB made software in Mac or Linux(minus WINE). Then I started looking for a new hope.

I didn’t know much about Batch programming until my friend showed me his works. Actually it was nothing more than a few line of code that can copy, delete files, etc. I found it interesting and learned a few basics.

It was my father that introduced me to PHP and SQL. He bought a two inches thick book about PHP&SQL in 2005. That book however, became my bedtime storybook until I decided to relearn PHP in early 2007.

Talking about web development, I created my first website when I was in Form 1. You know, MS Frontpage + Geocities=crap. At that time, I learned basic HTML but not yet JavaScript. I only get back to JavaScript when I read an article about XSS a few years back. Then I dived into basic AJAX when I was test writing a XSS worm.

I wrote my first C program when I was in 2nd year JAD. It was damn hard at first, but after understanding the concept, coding becomes much easier. In the same year, I learned PIC, a language to program microcontroller. In my case, autobots robots.

I did try to learn Perl but I think that it doesn’t suit me. So sayonara Perl. Then I stumbled upon an article saying that Ruby is going to be popular due to development of RoR. I gave it a try but it end up like Perl. I guess that I’m allergic to gems.

After reading a book titled CODE and scanning few articles about software cracking, I decided to try coding Assembly. I downloaded a trial version of Asm editor and played with it for a few weeks. When the software expired, my interest expired too. Maybe because it’s too hard or maybe I’m not ready with something radical.

Demn I forgot to mention about CSS. For a simple guy like me, I thought that CSS is nothing more than a language of eye candy or maybe ice cream of the web. I knew I was totally wrong when I realized that men and beauty can’t be separated, same goes to HTML and CSS. For the sake of my noobness, I end up learning CSS late compared to any other guys that you can find over the net.

P/S:Should I add Autoit into the list?
