Why Japanese sucks at English
March 17th, 2008 | by tk2 |We already know that Japanese really sucks when it comes to English, both speaking and writing. The question is, why?
1)Late start
Japanese start learning English in junior high school(~13 years old). Luckily, We Malaysians start at average 7 years old or maybe younger. You might be asking..So what are they learning during primary school?
Simple answer, memorizing Kanji.
2)Twisted tongue
Japanese can’t pronounce ‘L’ very well. They usually read it as ‘R’. So light becomes right, flight becomes fright. Some other examples are -ing(timing->taiminggu), -ter(computer->konpyuta) etc etc.
3)SVO vs SOV
The Japanese language structure is Subject-Object-Verb. Compared to English, it’s totally an up-side down world. I’m glad that Bahasa also using SVO. Imagine talking to your mum like this;
I yesterday school didn’t go. I caught cold because.
4)They don’t need English
Why learn English if they already have everything in Japanese? Name any scientific term from superconductor(超伝導) to DNA(デオキシリボ核酸), you will have them written in Kanji. That’s how powerful Chinese character is.
Whether they sucks at English or not, they are still one step ahead us.

Agree.
I learned Nihonggo (japanese language) for four years when i was in boarding school and when I was in Form 3, a group of nihongjins from aomori prefecture went to my school, and none of them can speak Eigo (English lang.). Haha.. Damn funny was then, tho i know nihonggo, but i was not that fluent as compared to a few friends and i ended up using hand signals with my japanese partner.
hoho.. memories.
=)

@fozr
So korean is SVO?
@Fuqaha
Good old days :p
I wasn’t lucky enough because I was in MRSM for 5 years, so no foreign language subjet was taken. I did try to learn nihongo from Kreko but at the end I can’t even read Hiragana. So I thought that nihongo is just for teenage girls that try to act cute.

yup. i agree. they’re very proud of their own language. it is an international language like english but not many can use it because it is hard to learn.
