Ubuntu - Linux for Human Beings

Ubuntu 7 Feisty Fawn was released about 2 weeks ago. Impressed with the improved features, I decided to give it a try and install it in my new pc. It took me about 8 hours downloading the .iso file from the Ubuntu site. Since I haven’t buy and install a burner in my PC, I had to ask my friend to burn it on a 700MB CDR.

The installation process was quite straight-forward, although it’s not as easy as installing Window. Afraid of making mistakes, I downloaded a video from Google Video to guide me along the process. Installing Linux should be easier if you already know a little bit about how it works. Ubuntu come with GUI installer so you don’t have to worry about writing commands.

The good thing is, I didn’t have to configure GRUB. I used to install Back|Track long time ago and configuring LILO was the most confusing part for a newbie like me. Ubuntu automatically configured it up so now I have a dual boot of Ubuntu and Windows XP. First thing to do after installing any OS is updating the system, lucky that Ubuntu has the auto-update features.

So what’s good about installing Linux anyway? Believe it or not, you don’t need antivirus in Linux. Virus mostly created to exploit Windows system, so by plugging in an USB drive with a dozen of malicious VB scripts or Brontok will not harm Linux, not even a nibble. But please set in mind that there are Linux virus out there and Linux is not immortal to hackers.

So why don’t you give it a try and install Linux in your pc? Need software for editing documents? use Open Office. Wanna surf faster and safer? use Firefox. Organize your mp3 and media files with Amarok. Edit your pictures with Gimp. Build your own Hollywood with Jahshaka. Run the Windows softwares using Wine. Stay connected with friends using Gaim [new code name pidgin]. All complete in one set and it’s free. If you don’t want to waste your time downloading the .iso file, order it for free from Ubuntu website.

Warning:Linux is for geeks and girls hate geeks.
